What does Durian mean?

"Durian" is the theme of the festival this year.
The durian is the fruit of trees of the genus Durio belonging to the Malvaceae, a large family which includes hibiscus, okra, cotton, mallows and linden trees. Widely known and revered in Southeast Asia as the "King of Fruits," the fruit is distinctive for its
large size, unique odour, and a formidable thorn-covered husk. Its name comes from the Malay word duri (thorn) together with Malay suffix that is -an (for building a noun in Malay),
meaning "thorny fruit.
Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk
green to
brown and its flesh pale-yellow to red, depending on species. The hard
outer husk is covered with sharp, prickly thorns, while the edible
custard-like
flesh within emits the strong, distinctive odour, which is regarded as
either fragrant or overpowering and offensive. The taste of the flesh
has been described as nutty and sweet.
(from Wikipedia)
"Durian"
was chosen as this year's theme because sometimes it can be necessary
to dig through "thorns" and "bad smell" in order to enjoy the sweet
taste of experimental (or any kind of) music. Those that go all the way
on this journey may learn to understand the true beauty even of thorns
and the interesting nature even of bad smells. And that is one of the
main thoughts behind the Interpenetration festival - by presenting a
wide range of styles and artistic approaches we hope to open holes
through which one can slip to discover new areas. That which once was
alien to us, is now our friend.
Sweet and nutty!

Code Inconnu

September 21, 9:00pm, Forum Keller
Austrian
group Code Inconnu operate on the cusp of post-rock and electronica,
favouring the latter on Spoil, Microbe, a hall of mirrors in which the
instrumentalists and their sampled and treated doppelgangers do battle.
Occasionally the complexity of the music, with its odd meters and
shifting harmonies, leads to a suffocating density. The best moments
here see them picking up the technological gauntlet thrown down by
Tortoise's "Djed", something most post-rockers haven't thought even to
try. "Sleepless Music" is one of the best things I've heard this year.
Guitars billow like slowly advancing clouds of mustard gas over a
slippery, cut-up 9/4 beat, before subsiding into a passage of beautiful
eerie arpeggios, then erupting into a free noise coda complete with
digital groans and splutters. In fact noise codas seem to be a
speciality. "Fu" climaxes with a monstrous rising guitar figure strafed
by Hecker-like squawks and squeals, and the final section of the superb
"Seeds" lapses into a moody landscape of dark electronic harmonies and
percussive blips and thuds. Spoil, Microbe is a bit too cluttered, as
if the group are trying to cram all their tricks into each track, but
that's an understandable lapse, when the tricks are as good as these.
Code Inconnu just need to let it all breathe a little, and they could
be world beaters.

Nothing
much must be said about Reflector. In a city rich of great musicians
like Graz, they are right at the top and one of the best bands in all
of central Europe.
This
time they will present the re-recorded re-release of "Flugangst" which
was first released by Tonto in 2001. There will be only this one track
"Flugangst" on the one side of a transparent vinyl record and a
printing of the band logo on the other side. Released by "Rock is
Hell". The title flugangst was inspired by the spanish/argentinian
movie "El lado oscuro del
corazón" by Eliseo Subiela.

Goran
Trajkoski was born in 1963 in Veles, Macedonia. Since 1980 he was a
member of many different groups like Saraceni, Padot na Vizantija,
Aporea, Mizar und Anastasia. With Anastasia he made the soundtrack for
the movie „Before The Rain“ (by Milcho Manchevski) which was a
world-wide success with the audience and the media alike. After this he
made two more records with Anastasia and then worked with the
Macedonian band Mizar with which he released another record. He toured
all of Europe with those two bands.
Throughout his life Trajkoski composed theater music for performances
in Macedonia and Athens (Greece).
At the Interpenetration Festival he will perform a piece for voice and
light installation by Slobodan Kajkut.

Erdem HELVACIOGLU: Memories On
Silent Walls
December 21, 8:00pm
What is the sound of
a building? What does it consist of? Is it the
timbre of an unmanned space or the sounds of various activities that
have taken place there? All of the sonic memories that have taken place
around the walls of a building and the unheard thoughts of people who
have experienced these memories do make up the real sound of a
building. Ataturk Cultural Center is a historical building and a
figure in the minds of Istanbul’s citizens. It is a phenomenon that
represents modernism, utopia, and contemporary thought. It is a
lonely and melancholic symbol watching the history of Istanbul and
Turkey.
“Memories on Silent Walls” consists of the processed and unprocessed
recordings of the productions that have taken place at Ataturk Cultural
Center, the sound of the empty building itself and its surroundings and
the interviews done with various people about the center. This work not
only tries to describe the past, the present and the future of the
building itself, but also urges us to ask this question to ourselves.
Should Ataturk Cultural Center stay or be replaced?
This work is 58 minutes long in 5 movements and will be introduced by
an audio lecture by the composer.
maru: Ich vergesse
December 22, 8:00pm
Everybody knows the
close connection between smells and memories. But
what about sound? Can sound trigger memories as well as smell can? How
important is sound in our memories? Is it easy for us to remember
sound? What about music? Which do we recall more easily? And why do we
have bad feelings about some sounds and why do we love others?
None of these questions will probably be answered in maru's piece for
voices and audiomulch called "Ich vergesse". But he tried. He
interviewed people about sound memories and based his composition on
the tellings of those memories. He rebuilt some of the sounds and let
them collide with the stories or with music, or with both. Sometimes a
memory meets the sound it's about and sometimes two memories collide or
a sound hides somewhere in the music waiting for the memory to pass by.

massaccesi

December 21, 9:00pm,

If
you experienced urkuma's crazy live show during Interpenetration
Festival '05 and liked it, you must come and see massaccesi play this
year. He is the ultimate political-noise-clown-activist or something
like that. And the opposite of it. Massaccesi lives somewhere in the US
with John Bear, Chicken and Monkey. He runs a gallery in Portsmouth,
New Hampshire, called ellO, he makes chaotic
videos and websites and when in Graz he loves shopping at Humana...
and he collects trash. "All of my work centers around recycling. From
physical pieces made with fabric or paper to composing experimental
musical pieces and performing, I am constantly re-using and recycling.
I actually dislike using new or custom-made materials for things. I'm
obsessed with how we as humans generally use and abuse but usually
don't re-use (or try to maximise the use of) what we're consuming. We
are currently consuming far more than we are re-using and the main goal
I hope to achieve is that people can be inspired by this idea to try to
view any object as re-usable in some way."
With no doubt one of the highlights of this year's Interpenetration
Festival!

The Striggles

December 22, 9:00pm,
Postgarage
Have
you heard (of) The Striggles yet? No? Then it is time to free yourself
of the ear-wax of mainstream guitar music. This band doesn't fulfill
any of your rock or indie expectations or whatever genre it may be. The
music of The Striggles is more of a creative stream than a final
product. There are a few constants though. The years of experience of
the musicians for example. Or the musical influences that range from
bands like Can, Sonic Youth and Captain Beefheart, to Snakefinger,
Shellac and John Lee Hooker.
Now who are these guys? There is Gottfried Krienzer on guitar who also
plays in the noise-rock-electro band Code Inconnu whose second release
“Spoil, Microbe” was frenetically celebrated as one of the best
releases of 2006 in Wire magazine. Then there is Robert Lepenik, also
on guitar, who many know for his great work as composer and musician in
projects and bands like Melville or Fetish 69 and the Grazer art group
tonto. Bassist and singer Martin Plass sang in musicals and also played
in experimental projects like Pol-Ton, Die Sekte and Nectarius Soft.
And last but not least there is Slobodan Kajkut on drums. A member of
countless bands he also composes contemporary - and controversal -
music (after having studied with Georg Friedrich Haas and Clemens
Gadenstaetter).
Sounds like an explosive mixture, doesn't it? It does. And it is.
The diversity of musical pasts and the sometimes even contradictory
approaches create a new and surprising sound. No wonder they were the
hottest topic among the audience of the Interpenetration Festival 2006
in Graz (where they premiered).
The first demo recordings promise more hysteria and gossip for the time
their first cd will be out.

Eric
Arn, as leader of Primordial Undermind, has been tirelessly
mining the further regions of avant psych-rock for the past 15 years,
resulting in a sonically fertile body of work. Arn cut his teeth
in the legendary Crystallized Movements throughout the 1980's, the
Twisted Village flagship band which, in its wake, also spawned Magic
Hour and Major Stars (Wayne Rogers & Kate Village). Arn has guided
the Undermind through a steady progression from distorted, psychedelic
Nuggets-esque overload to full blown free instrumental rock and
everything in between. After relocating from Austin, Texas to Vienna,
Austria in 2005, Arn has been furthrer developing his skills as a solo
free improvisor and finger-picking raga guitarist. Expect the
unexpected.

Spires That In The Sunset Rise

December 22, 9:00pm,
Postgarage
Spires
That in the Sunset Rise is the musical collaboration of Kathleen Baird,
Taralie Peterson and Georgia Vallas. Steeped in primal experimentalism
and world eclecticism, the music is a repellant and magnetizing swarm
of harps, guitars, cello, drums, harmonium, banjo, mbira, spike fiddle,
bells, and vocals. Now based in Chicago, Illinois, the four musicians
have been playing music in different formations for over 10 years.
Through these relationships, the music has evolved into a synthesis of
various influence, with an arduous search of the unexamined (albeit
darker sides) of folk music.
"Spires That in the Sunset Rise emit such inspired gusts of collective
fire that they resemble a witches' coven almost as much as a band,
their shadow-draped music seeming to issue forth organically from the
soil like a sulfurous hot spring.... unbounded, ageless music one might
expect to hear emanating from the deepest forest, as mysterious
black-cloaked figures dance around the fire-ring." (Pitchfork Media)
"intoxicating and intense!" (The Wire)
"The Spires' third album is a masterpiece in their already
mind-boggling and totally unique musical ouvre. With 'This is Fire'
(Secret Eye), the all femme group takes another step away from the
scattered pagan howls and freakouts of their incredible self-titled
debut (The Slits plays Comus?) towards the realm of pure psychedelic
mysticism." (Foxy Digitalis)
